Into Music Reviews: New Music March 2024

It’s been a wee while since Into Creative gave you the lowdown on what new music is rocking our boat. Well, we have some absolute belters to tell you about and all the better in that our selections this time around, are all Scottish artists. So do read on and check out some amazing home grown talent.

Artist: QUAD 90
Single: Anodyne

Label: Last Night From Glasgow

Immediately settling into a Mediterranean vibe of pure electronica, house and post-punk beats, the new single from QUAD 90 is anything but anodyne. The band’s third release on the Last Night From Glasgow label sees the former Riverside Music College students cement what is a growing reputation and no wonder.

With a debut album rumoured to land in 2025, live dates including the Last Night From Glasgow Weekender event across April 12th-13th, the coming twelve months are sure to be an exciting time for the duo who make up the band, Amelia Lironi and Naomi Mackay.

Head over to the LNFG website here for more on the band’s releases to date.

Artist: The Shorez
Single: 768

Label: Self released

With only two singles released to date, it’s fair to say that The Shorez don’t have much of a recording background just yet, but what they do have at this embryonic stage of their development is a couple of crackers in the tank!

Check out their latest single, 768 which is five minutes of rip-roaring indie tuneage featuring razor-sharp guitars, rocksteady drums, a bass-line holding it together and a dispassionate vocal throughout. The four-piece (Colin Anderson – vocals, Daniel Erskine – guitar, Dean Adamson – bass, Michael Cairney – drums) hail from East Lothian (Tranent) and laid down this track at the fabled Green Door Studio in Glasgow’s West End.

On this form there is much promise, record companies will surely be checking them out and I for one will be in attendance at their upcoming gig in Bannermans, Edinburgh on 15 April.

Artist: Isobel Campbell
Single: 4316

Label: Isobel Campbell under licence to Cooking Vinyl Limited

Let’s cut to the chase, the world is ALWAYS a better place with the release of new music from Isobel Campbell. This early cut from her new long player Bow To Love (out 17 May) is making serious inroads to my single of the year so far. 4316 just hurtles along for three or so minutes, all psychedelic swirls and dreams with gentle guitar and synths that get the head nodding while the lyrics are a paean to the times we find ourselves living in.

Campbell is of course well known for her previous work as a member of Belle & Sebastian, three albums with Mark Lanegan as well as collaborations with the likes of Bill Wells and The Jesus and Mary Chain plus a handy back catalogue as a solo artist in her own right. Get on this one folks, it is an absolute earworm.

Artist: The Jesus and Mary Chain
Single: Girl 71

Label: The Jesus and Mary Chain under licence to Fuzz Club

Isn’t 2024 turning out to be a great year for new music? Girl 71 is the third single from the new album by The Jesus and Mary Chain and follows on from jamcod and Chemical Animal

My first impression though was the intro sounds a bit like Dressed For Success by Roxette but that thought soon dissipates after the first minute and the track dissolves into classic J&MC territory where the twin combo of William Reid’s fuzzy guitar sound and brother Jim’s deadpan vocal are accompanied by rhythmic synths and drums.

The new album Glasgow Eyes drops on 22 March with a tour around the same time including dates in Glasgow and Edinburgh. For all things on The Jesus and Mary Chain, head to their website here

Artist: Gun
Single: Boys Don’t Cry
Label: Gun under licence to Cooking Vinyl Limited

Gun are right up there as one of Scotland’s finest rock bands and new single Boys Don’t Cry merely confirms that assertion. The track oozes self-assured confidence. The band seem to be at their musical peak, which bodes well for the new album, Hombres, which is due to be released on 12 April.

Of the track, vocalist Dante Gizzi said “Boys Don’t Cry is a song about those people who are steeped in a delusion of superiority. They strut through life expecting the world to shower them with favours, oblivious to the reality that humanity and genuine effort pave the path to true accomplishment“.

Gun will be playing stripped back sets in support of the new album at record shops in Glasgow (Assai), Dundee (Assai), Edinburgh (Assai), Aberdeen (HMV), Livingston (HMV), Ayr (HMV) and Stirling (HMV) in April as well as full band shows across the UK, including gigs in Montrose, Glasgow and Dunfermline.
