Declan McConville with A Celtic State of Mind – Diary of a Treble Treble

I will be covering each competitive match which Celtic have competed in during the run towards the historic Treble Treble. I was fortunate enough to attend every domestic fixture last season, being a part of what would be history. Along the way, I have met many great people and had many a fantastic day.

Alashkert 0-3 Celtic

The start of this historic campaign begins in the searing Yerevan heat where Celtic now had to negotiate their way through an extra round to qualify for the Champions League. This was a typically tough qualifying game, which evidently saw the superior Celtic come out on top with goals coming from Odsonne Edouard, James Forrest and Callum McGregor. The Armenian Champions faced an almost impossible task having to travel to Glasgow the following week.

Celtic 3-0 Alashkert

With an early goal coming from Moussa Dembele, it looked as if Alashkert would be in for a very long evening at Celtic Park. Very shortly after this, defender Jozo Simunovic saw red after a high reckless challenge. However, this didn’t overshadow the terrific start that Celtic had made to the game with the advantage being doubled after Dembele slotted home from the penalty spot. The Hoops were coasting with James Forrest again getting in on the act not long before the interval. With Rosenborg leaving it late against Valur, the champions of Scotland and Norway would once again face each other.

Celtic 3-1 Rosenborg

It looked as if Rosenborg were out to get revenge when they stunned the home support with an early goal from full-back Birger Meling. Record signing Odsonne Edouard managed to pull the Celts back level just before the break with a deft touch and finish. Swiftly after the interval, Olivier Ntcham scored an absolute cracker from the edge of the box, bending the ball into the back of the net with his right foot. There were more chances for the Hoops but Edouard again showed his composure on the 75th minute to chip the goalkeeper and give the team a two goal cushion before heading to Trondheim.
